Lab Power Supply

August 2019

My only power supply before starting this project was a single channel 0-15V variable power supply. This project started because when experimenting with op amps or other devices that needed a +/- supply. I wanted to keep this project as simple as possible I just wanted 2 potentiometers to control the voltage and current respectively.  The IC I decided on was the LM317 adjustable regulator which can be configured to regulate voltage or current or in my case both. The SMPS I used was a 24V 1.2A supply which will also give me some more flexibility when prototyping vs my old 15V supply.

My only power supply before starting this project was a single channel 0-15V variable power supply. This project started because when experimenting with op amps or other devices that needed a negative rail. I wanted to keep this project as simple as possible I just wanted 2 potentiometers to control the voltage and current respectively.  The IC I decided on was the LM317 adjustable regulator which can be configured to regulate voltage or current, or in my case both. I routed out my board in eagle and selected pots from jaycar with the right power rating, this was especially important for the current pot. In fusion I created a bracket to hold the PCB and SMPS in the box snugly.

The enclosure itself was a project box from jaycar that holds the device nicely. I left some space to the right incase I wanted to add a display for voltage and current.
